Human rights and democracy activist from Nigeria. Founder/director of the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy KIND

HAFSAT's STORY
"Hafsat is a Nigerian whose father, the elected president of Nigeria, was denied the opportunity to form a government, deposed by a military takeover and died in prison last year in June. Hafsats mother fought hard for his release during the imprisonment and was herself gunned down by agents of the military in 1996. Hafsat has worked for years to promote the cause of democracy in Nigeria in the United States." (Quoted from PARADE Magazine, Cover Article, Feb. 28, 1998)

Hafsat Abiola graduated from Harvard in 1997 and has established an organization memorializing her mother's life, called the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy. She was the president of the International African Students Association for two years. She is currently a Fetzer Fellow and she sits on the board of the State of the World Forum. Hafsat recently resigned from Special Olympics to work on KIND full-time.

HAFSAT'S CURRENT SITUATION
Hafsat currently works on issues of women and youth leadership programs in Nigeria. She is also involved in conflict prevention and resolution programs and supporting multinationals in developing their roles as global citizens in the new millenium. Her work is done through KIND (Kudirat Initiative for Democracy), an organization she founded and directs in her mothers memory. KIND has also recently initiated a program to assist the free press in Nigeria, supporting local journalists in their work, and helping to promote community voices through the set-up of micro radios, tele-centers and rural telecommunication projects.

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE
The Friends Of Nigeria Network, a KIND project, is working to raise international attention and advocacy on behalf of democracy in Nigeria. Hafsat would urge you to join in solidarity with the FON Network, writing to top U.S. officials and asking that they take clear action to prevent the human rights violations and environmental destruction now plaguing her country.

See the weblog for a piece on what Frank, Lynn and Hafsat said.
