Against 500 years of expectation and programming we are
finally able to wake up and say: My god, nature is alive! It's
talking to us. It's alive. This is not a metaphor, I am not a
romantic. This is not an artistic or aesthetic stance. Nature is
alive, someone is on the line! Terence Mckenna
I came to be the change quite by accident. It was a great
adventure for me. I have always perceived myself as
vehemently anti-capitalist. An old school marxist/anarchist,
albeit non-practicing (after all, revolutionary politics does seem
to have gone up a blind alley in recent years) but because of
that I had some serious resistance on the first day of the
conference due to the apparent corporate nature of it all.
Then I realised a few things. Firstly as an armchair socialist I
have the perfect belief system to justify sit ting around
complaining about everything and being a victim, which frankly
is a complete waste of good energy.
Secondly, while the corporate world may be a foreign land to
me it suddenly seemed incredibly encouraging that socially
and economically powerful people are serious about real
change - after all, they have the best chance to really challenge
the old structures from within.
I now feel an energetic shift, which is pointing me in a totally
new direction.
For me, Be The Change was a kind of watershed. Over the past
few years I have been drawn deeper and deeper into energy
work (Reiki, Shamanism, Bio Dynamics) and these techniques
have shown me a way out of the prison like mindset of western
rationalism and the prospect of living in a godless mechanical
and ultimately meaningless universe.
Isolated and out on the fringes for so long, for me Be the
change was like coming home and the alchemical quality of the
many new connections I made at the conference have helped
to transform me more than I could have hoped for, giving me
the courage, to finally embrace my own truth and make a
commitment to being a positive and inspirational part of the
future, rather than just sit on the sidelines and watch in dismay.
To quote the late Terence Mckenna again: This is not a dress
rehearsal for the apocalypse. This is the real thing, folks. A
planet brings forth an opportunity like this only once in its
lifetime - and we are ready, and we are poised, and as a
community we are ready to move into it, to claim it, to make it
our own. Its there - go for it!
